Inauguration of new chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti

Opening concert of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw

On Saturday September 25, 2021, Lorenzo Viotti will be inaugurated as the new chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. During this opening concert of the new season, the fresh Italian sound of Viotti and the German late romanticism, a specialism of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, come together in Rossini's William Tell Overture and the grand symphony Aus Italien by R. Strauss.

Lorenzo Viotti is a 31-year-old conductor of Swiss and French nationality. In 2019 he was appointed chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Dutch National Opera. He takes over the baton from Marc Albrecht, who said goodbye in June 2020 after ten successful seasons. Viotti is one of today's most exciting and in-demand conductors, working internationally with the most renowned orchestras and opera houses, such as The Metropolitan Opera in New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Earlier this month, Viotti opened his first season with Dutch National Opera with two opera productions: Der Zwerg by Zemlinksy and Missa in tempore belli by Haydn, a collaboration with the Chorus of the Dutch National Opera and the Dutch National Ballet. The press was full of praise for the performances of Viotti and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in both productions. 'Lorenzo Viotti and his shining orchestra blaze in the double season opening', Peter van der Lint wrote in Dutch newspaper Trouw.
