The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most versatile orchestras in the Netherlands. It plays the great symphonies of composers such as Mahler and Brahms as well as operas by R. Strauss and Wagner. The orchestra excels in the style of the late romantic and early twentieth century and is renowned for its high level. The Royal Concertgebouw is the home venue for varied concert programming. For over 30 years, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the affiliated Netherlands Chamber Orchestra have been the primary orchestra partner of Dutch National Opera and are considered one of the best opera orchestras in Europe. Since 2021 the orchestra has opened a new chapter with Lorenzo Viotti as chief conductor.

Profile
We are looking for a versatile colleague who ensures excellent performances on (inter)national concert stages and at the opera whilst mastering a broad repertory. You have a professional work ethic and radiate enthusiasm on every stage. As a member of the orchestra, you will also contribute to our educational projects and social activities. All employees have a talent for harmonious teamwork and possess good communication skills.
String players have a permanent position with one of the two orchestras. This vacancy is for a position in the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. In the interest of the organization, you can occasionally be required to play with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.
Selection
The selection consists of two parts. The artistic selection takes place through the audition. Secondly, on a later date, an interview takes place regarding the candidate’s affinity with the NedPhO|NKO to establish whether knowledge, skills and personality match the demands of the job. Based on this, a recommendation will be made to the management.
Because of Dutch law systems, the auditions are only open to EU citizens and citizens from Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein, or other musicians already holding a non-temporary residence permit for the Netherlands with full work authorization.

Job conditions
Date of commencement of employment for the mentioned position will be the 1st of august 2024. There is room to agree to a later start date if necessary. The salary is in accordance with the national regulations of Dutch Orchestras, which you can find on www.vvno.nl, the website of the association of Dutch Orchestras.
- You start with a one year fixed-term employment contract;
- Contract size is 80%;
- Salary in accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch Orchestras, scale 1 (column 110%). The step depends on your years of experience in a professional orchestra;
- Mandatory participation in the ABP pension fund;
- Different fees according to collective labor agreement for Dutch Orchestras, which you can find on www.vvno.nl, the website of the association of Dutch Orchestras;
- Date of commencement of employment for the mentioned position will be decided by mutual agreement;
- Unique Opportunity to play in opera’s, symphonic music, chamber music and educational/social projects;
- A staff association (voluntary participation) that organizes many fun activities such as boat tours in Amsterdam, visiting the local zoo, different workshops and lunch/dinner party’s.
