The Netherlands Philharmonic and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra are two of the most versatile orchestras in the Netherlands. For over 30 years, the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra have been the primary orchestra partner of Dutch National Opera and are among the best opera orchestras in Europe.
Both orchestra’s are renowned for their high level and share a concert series in the famous Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. With the appointment of Lorenzo Viotti in 2021 as chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Dutch Opera this orchestra has developed significantly.
Last season the orchestra performed a successful concert tour with pianist Maria Joao Pires in Vienna, Paris, Dresden, Munich and Hamburg. This year the orchestra tours Belgium and Germany. The orchestra excels in repertoire of the romantics such as Wagner, Strauss and Mahler.
The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra is an inspired collective with an expressive way of playing. The orchestra creates unique interpretations through its core values: intensive teamwork and open communication. Gordan Nikolic is the musical leader of the orchestra and leads the orchestra from the concertmaster chair. Works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn form the heart of its repertoire as well as commissions various young composers.
The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra is joined by the Netherlands Philharmonic in one organization with beautiful offices and rehearsal spaces in the eastern part of Amsterdam. The orchestras are known for their outreach and educational programs making classical music accessible to everyone.

Profile
- You are versatile and ensure excellent performances on (inter)national concert stages and at the opera whilst mastering a broad repertory. That requires a professional and flexible work ethic. The unique combination of our two orchestra (Symphony orchestra & Chamber orchestra, which both also play opera) make for a versatile work environment. Besides playing in both the Netherlands Philharmonic and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, your annual workload will involve playing chamber music and participating in educational/social projects;
- You radiate enthusiasm on every stage;
- You have a talent for harmonious teamwork and possess open communication skills;
- Alongside their musical responsibilities, section principals make an active contribution to the managementof the orchestra. They lead sectional rehearsals, they, coach members of the section and they are able to give and receive positive feedback. They also encourage a collegial working relationship with the section and between the other sections and are also the link between individual players and management.
- We prefer candidates who have at least 3 years of experience as a principal. A candidate who has less or no experience as a principal, increases his chance of being invited by uploading recent video material.
- Occasionally you may be asked to play projects on a lower seat.
Employment conditions
- You start with a one year fixed-term employment contract;
- Contract size is 80%;
- Salary in accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch Orchestras, scale 3 (column 110%). The step depends on your years of experience in a professional orchestra;
- Mandatory participation in the ABP pension fund;
- Different fees according to collective labor agreement for Dutch Orchestras, which you can find on www.vvno.nl , the website of the association of Dutch Orchestras;
- Date of commencement of employment for the mentioned position will be January 2025;
- Unique Opportunity to play in opera’s, symphonic music, chamber music and educational/social projects.
A staff association (voluntary participation) that organizes many fun activities such as boat tours in Amsterdam, visiting the local zoo, different workshops and lunch/dinner parties.
