Conductor, violinist and composer, Giuseppe Mengoli was recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dutch National Opera (DNO) in Amsterdam, starting in June 2021. Mengoli’s conducting career began as a result of his work as concertmaster in youth and professional orchestras at the age of 19. His leadership skills were noticed by renowned conductors who, as a result, invited him to work as their assistant conductor.
Between 2014 and 2018, he worked as an assistant with Oleg Caetani, John Axelrod, and Valery Gergiev; working with institutions and orchestras such as Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla, Oslo Opera House, Mariinsky Theater, LaVerdi Symphony Orchestra, and London Covent Garden and made his debut with the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester in Bad Schandau in 2018. Having studied violin, composition, analysis, orchestration, as well as percussion, trumpet, and piano since he was a child, conducting soon became the ideal approach to express his vision of music.
Mengoli has a vast experience as concertmaster, leader, and tutti violinist in several orchestras such as Konzerthaus Berlin, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Tschaikovsky Festival Orchestra, Mariinsky Theater, Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester, Solisten Europees Luxembourg, and the Berliner Kamerata. Mengoli has performed with conductors such as I. Fischer, H. Blomstedt, D. Harding, P. Jordan, J. Nott, L. Viotti, V. Gergiev, E. Inbal, V. Jurowsky taking part in international tours to the most prestigious theaters in Europe (Philharmonie Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikverein, Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Mariinsky Theater, Lucerne Festival, and La Scala).
Winner of several international competitions as a violinist, Mengoli completed his violin studies with the distinction "cum Laude" and special mention. He earned a Master’s degree in chamber music in Italy, attended Boris Belkin's masterclasses at the Chigi Academy in Siena, and completed another Master’s in violin with the highest honors at the HfM Würzburg with Prof. Tianwa Yang.
Mengoli is currently studying orchestral conducting at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik "F. Liszt" Weimar, mentored by M° N. Pasquet. As part of his studies, he regularly conducts orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Weimar, Jenaer Philarmonie, and the Göttinger Symphoniker and continues to develop a double career, both as a conductor and as a violinist.
Recent highlights include a debut as guest concertmaster with Filarmonica Toscanini in Parma, conducting and performing as a soloist in Berlin and Milano with the Berliner Camerata, an invitation as a soloist to play Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Jenaer Philarmonie, and rehearsing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with the Youth Musicians of Europe Orchestra.
