In order to continue to function at the top level, top musicians and good instruments are needed first and foremost. But there are many other things that are indispensable for a professional orchestra. These can include practical matters such as a rehearsal room, transport and instrument storage, but also attracting special conductors and soloists or putting together special programmes, such as Mahler's great Eighth Symphony.
