Shostakovich's Eighth symphony
Russian-Finnish conductor Dima Slobodeniouk is a regular guest of the Netherlands Philharmonic. This time, he conducts Dmitri Shostakovich's tragic Eighth Symphony. Shostakovich wrote this ‘war symphony’ in the months that followed the decisive battle of Stalingrad in late 1942. Although the main defeat was for Germany, the Russian rulers considered the work unsuitable for Soviet propaganda, so the symphony went into prolonged suspension shortly after its premiere in 1943.
Ivan Karizna conducts Thomas Larcher
Since his debut with the Netherlands Philharmonic in 2023, when he replaced Truls Mørk in Dvořák's Cello Concerto at the last minute, the young French cellist Ivan Karizna has been causing a furore with renowned orchestras around the world. He was one of the biggest sensations at the tenth edition of the Cello Bienale Amsterdam in 2024, ‘with a smashing First Cello Concerto’ by Shostakovich. This time, Karizna will play the Dutch premiere of the latest cello Concerto by the acclaimed Thomas Larcher, Returning into darkness .
