Nikola Meeuwsen, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition 2025, plays Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23, by his favourite composer. In addition, Gordan Nikolić conducts the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in music by Beethoven, Ravel and a new work by Julian Tjon Sack Kie, composed especially for the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.

Nikola Meeuwsen with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23

Nikola Meeuwsen, the rapidly rising piano virtuoso, was the first Dutchman to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2025. The highlight of that competition was his performance in the semi-finals of Mozart's Ninth Piano Concerto , by his favourite composer. It is no coincidence that Meeuwsen is now returning to the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 . A piano concerto of great, but above all subtle class, if only for the mildly melancholic siciliano of the middle movement.

The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra plays Beethoven, Ravel and Tjon Sack Kie

Ravel, a great admirer of Mozart, takes you on a wonderful musical journey through well-known fairy tales. We introduce Ravel's suite with a new work by Julian Tjon Sack Kie. His music moves between Western music, electronics, his Surinamese roots and West Africa. As a contrast to Mozart's elegant music, Gordan Nikolić conducts the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in Beethoven's rugged Grosse Fuge , a grandiose tour de force for strings.

This programme can be heard on 22 May at the Concertgebouw, on 23 May at PHIL Haarlem and on 29 May at the Chassé Theatre in Breda.
