Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 is festive and bright. It is a true ‘trumpet symphony’: resplendent brass, an energetic opening and an open, optimistic atmosphere.

Second Cello Concerto
is spectacular and technically demanding. It consists of two large movements and demands the utmost from the soloist. Less well-known than his First Cello Concerto, but no less impressive. The British cellist Steven Isserlis, who performs worldwide and is renowned for his clear tone and expressive playing, combines technical mastery with a direct, narrative style, ideal for this virtuoso work.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8
Ludwig van Beethoven’s E Eighth Symphony E is short, powerful and surprisingly humorous. Beethoven himself called it ‘my little symphony in F’. The music sounds light and playful, yet is full of energy and sharp accents. It is striking that the final movement is the most exuberant and powerful, which was unusual for the time.
