Agenda

Giuseppe Verdi is perhaps the greatest opera composer ever. In his Requiem, the mass for the dead, Verdi therefore knew how to capture human emotions in music like no other. Lorenzo Viotti, the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Choir of The National Opera are fantastically well matched as an opera team. Their performance of the Requiem promises to be a spectacle.

Percussionist Matthijs van Driel tips Verdi's Requiem!

Verdi's Requiem

No composer has succeeded better in conveying the fear and destruction on Judgment Day than Verdi. The popping orchestra, the blaring trumpets, the overwhelming choir, the sound of agony in the piccolo and the pounding big drum; there is no escaping this. But Verdi's Requiem is much more than just the famous Dies Irae . Take the opening: the subdued, penetrating sounds seem to come out of nowhere, and the first notes of the chorus are like a mumbling prayer. Love, gratitude, happiness and mourning all pass by in this opera of life and death.

Lorenzo Viotti and the Choir of the National Opera

Lorenzo Viotti, the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Choir of the National Opera are completely in tune with each other: they form the permanent 'opera team' of The National Opera. Together with a star-studded cast of vocal soloists, this promises a grandiose and unforgettable concert.
