Agenda

‘The reincarnation of Liszt’, is how the press reacted to the young piano virtuoso Alexandre Kantorow. So expectations for his performance of Brahms’ greatest Piano Concerto No. 1 are running high. And the Concerto for Orchestra, one of Bartók’s most illustrious works conducted by chief conductor Viotti, promises to be a feast for the ears.

Violinist Koen Stapert tips Bartók's Concert for Orchestra!

Alexandre Kantorow plays Brahms

Alexandre Kantorow was the outright winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 2016. Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 also does require a pianist of great stature. When the composer began it, the idea was to turn it into a symphony, but ended up with a piano concerto. The result is music in which pianist and orchestra are cunningly interwoven in a grand romantic composition. Alexandre Kantorow is no stranger to the Netherlands Philharmonic; he has been a guest of the orchestra on several occasions. And earlier in season 24/25 he appeared with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto.

Lorenzo Viotti conducts Bartók

The Netherlands Philharmonic conducted by chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti will next perform one of Béla Bartók's best-known works: the Concert for Orchestra . A work in which he sublimely combines classical forms with elements from the folk music of his native Hungary. And where Brahms requires only one soloist in his piano concerto, Bartók goes a step further and gives almost all orchestra members exciting soloistic roles. The result is a magnificent symphony by dozens of virtuosos who bring out the best in their instruments. And the orchestra is well entrusted with that under the direction of the ever-passionate chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti.
