Avi Malkin received lessons at a music school from 1970 to 1981, after which he went to study at the Baku Music Academy.

He was a member of the Baku chamber music ensemble for modern music.
In 1985, he won first prize at the “Trans Kavkasian” international competition for viola players. Then he worked for a year as a professor at the Baku Academy of Music. Since 2003 he has played in the Netherlands Philharmonic.
