David Kutz

Principal tuba

Dave Kutz was born in Canada.

He holds the position of solo tubist in the Netherlands Philharmonic since the 2009-2010 season. He came to the Netherlands in 2002 because of a position with the Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since then he has performed in virtually every major music company in his new home country, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, RCO Brass, Asko|Schönberg, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Residentie Orkest. Outside the Netherlands, he has played in the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Philharmonia Zürich, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.

But Dave doesn't always sit in the back row of an orchestra; he also likes to step into the foreground with his instrument. A proud member of the musician collective Splendor, he was at the forefront of several multidisciplinary projects. He also performs with a brass ensemble from the Netherlands Philharmonic and is regularly invited as a soloist. Meanwhile, Dave Kutz gave tuba recitals on four continents and was a guest at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and the Holland Festival.
His CD Pure Imagination (2015), recorded with pianist Gerard Bouwhuis and the Chamber Consort Amsterdam, ranges from transcriptions of a baroque concerto by Marcello and cello music by Rachmaninoff to Markus Fagerudd's Rambling Elephant Rag . Listen appreciated the album with a rating of 9.
In addition to his career as a performing musician, Dave Kutz regularly gives master classes. The tuba player studied with Rex Martin, Gene Pokorny, Dennis Miller, Nicolas Atkinson and Arnold Jacobs and earned a Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University in Chicago. Before emigrating to the Netherlands, he was affiliated with several music faculties in the United States and Canada.
Dave Kutz is a Yamaha International Artist and Lätzsch Cimbasso Performing Artist.
