Douw Fonda

Cello, second associate principal

American cellist Douw Fonda trained with Steven Doane at the Eastman School of Music (Rochester) and with Timothy Eddy in New York.

Along with his ensembles, he had several opportunities to be intensively coached by the Cleveland Quartet and the Julliard Quartet, among others. He won several competitions and played as a soloist with orchestras in Boston and New York. In the Netherlands, he studied baroque cello for three years at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Jaap ter Linden, where he was also asked to solo with the baroque orchestra.

A passionate chamber musician, Douw is part of the Vespucci Quartet and Benjamin Franklin Trio, among others. He has collaborated with Gordan Nikolić, Daniel Rowland, Emmy Verhey, Jeroen van Veen and Marije Nie. In addition, he works as deputy cello leader with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. Lately, Douw has been increasingly coaching the cello groups of youth and student orchestras, including the Amersfoort Youth Orchestra, Netherlands Youth String Orchestra, Utrechtsch Studenten Concert, VU Orchestra, and chamber music ensembles such as Jonge Strijkers Amsterdam, Cugnon Junior, Cuypers Ensemble and during workshops of the Cello Biennale Amsterdam.
