Fokke van Heel began playing horn in the brass band of Oldeboorn, Friesland.

He then studied at the Conservatories of The Hague, Zwolle and Essen with Oldrich Milek and Hermann Baumann. As a soloist he performed with the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest, the Orkest van het Oosten and Het Gelders Orkest, among others. After appointments with the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra, the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, he has been principal hornist with the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra since 1998. In addition, Fokke van Heel plays regularly in various chamber music ensembles, such as the Nieuw Ensemble, AskoƖSchönberg and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble.
