Gertjan Loot

Principal trumpet

Gertjan Loot began playing the trumpet at the age of 11.

He had just moved to Friesland. After a period on (es) cornet in various brass bands, he eventually takes up the trumpet again. He decided to study trumpet at the Conservatory in Leeuwarden. Later Loot continued his studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and took lessons from Peter Masseurs (trumpeter with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra).

After his studies in 1990 he plays in various orchestras and ensembles. Among others he plays in the orchestra of the Hoofdstad Operette and with orchestra “De Volharding”. Besides modern trumpet, Gertjan Loot also plays baroque trumpet, piccolo and flugelhorn. Currently, Loot works as a baroque trumpet player in various baroque orchestras at home and abroad. Since 2004 he has been associated as solo trumpetist with the Residentie Orkest in The Hague and since 2006 he has been involved with the ensemble Nieuw Amsterdams Peil.

Podcast with Gertjan Loot
He began his musical career in a brass band and had performed at the Royal Albert Hall three times before the age of 19. Trumpeter Gertjan Loot talks about this special experience, but also shares what it is like to have to take the stage half an hour after receiving an intensely sad message. He also expresses his gratitude for the example his parents gave him and he now tries to pass on to his own children.
