Ionel Manciu

First concertmaster

Ionel Manciu received his first violin lessons from Tamara Caftanat and later from Galina Buinovschi at the Musical Lyceum “C.Porumbescu” in Chisinau.

At the age of ten he made his debut with the Moldovan National Chamber Orchestra with Mozart's Violin Concerto in G. Since then he has won several national and international competitions. Manciu has soloed with the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and National Chamber Orchestra in Chisinau, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra in Bucharest, the Lvov Chamber Orchestra and the Pori Chamber Orchestra in Finland.
Recent highlights include a concert at Carnegie Hall as part of the Guildhall Artists in New York series, a performance of Shostakotch's Violin Concerto No. 1 at Barbican Hall and a recital of all six of Ysaÿe's Solo Sonatas at the 1901 Arts Club. As part of the Mithras Piano Trio, his wins include the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, the Royal Over-Seas League Competition and the Cavatina Trust Chamber Music Competition. Manciu plays on a Guadagnini violin (owned by the VandenBroek Foundation), on loan from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.
