James Newby

Baritone

English baritone James Newby studied in London with Robert Dean. He has many achievements to his name: he was a BBC New Generation Artist, Rising Star with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the European Concert Hall Organisation, winner of the Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, the Kathleen Ferrier Award and the Richard Tauber Prize Wigmore Hall/Kohn International Song Competition.

He has sung concert repertoire with renowned orchestras and has performed in many opera houses. With the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, he sang Otto Ketting's opera Ithaka in the NTR Saturday Matinee. Newby is a passionate lieder singer. During the Mahler Festival 2025, he sang a song recital with Julius Drake and Catriona Morrison in the Small Hall of the Concertgebouw. He also gave recitals at the Oxford Song Festival and in Wigmore Hall. His debut CD I Wonder as I Wander , with pianist Joseph Middleton, released by BIS in 2020, was awarded the Diapason d'Or Découverte.
