The ensemble consists of professionally trained musicians who can also be heard regularly as soloists. High-profile performances by the choir have included such major productions as Messiaen' s Saint François d'Assise , Berlioz' s Les Troyens and Rossini's Guillaume Tell . For its part in Schoenberg's Moses und Aaron , the choir received the Prix d'Amis from the Friends of The National Opera in 1996. The renowned professional magazine Opernwelt named the choir the best opera choir of 2016.
The Choir of The National Opera regularly participates in concerts and productions offstage in Amsterdam's music theater. For example, the singers performed in a concert performance of Wagner's
Der fliegende Holländer
at the 2013 Gergiev Festival, a concert that was also played with great success in Paris and Dortmund. From September 2014 to April 2021, the choir was under the artistic direction of Ching-Lien Wu. Today the chorus is led by Edward Ananian Cooper.
