Marjolein de Waart was born in 1967 into a family with a long musical history.

Her father Edo de Waart is an oboist and an internationally acclaimed conductor, whose own father in turn worked with the chorus of the National Opera. Marjolein herself studied violin at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. She has been with the orchestra since 1992, until recently as second associate principal.
