For several years he was deputy principal clarinetist with the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2004 he has been first clarinetist with the Netherlands Philharmonic. He also plays with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Rick Huls was regularly heard as a soloist with Holland Symfonia and of course with the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.
He is co-founder of the Uriel Ensemble, which has its own successful concert series in the Amsterdam Amstel Church. For years Rick Huls has been the life partner of cellist Quirine Viersen, who regularly performs solo with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. 'It's always very special for me to witness that, a feeling of warmth and pride when she descends the grand staircase to the stage in The Concertgebouw.'
