Rik Otto began playing the violin at age 6, but chose the cello at age 15.

He studied at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg with György Schiffer and Mirel Iancovici. He also took lessons with Godfried Hoogeveen, Mstislav Rostropovich and chamber music with Jo Juda. He also took many master classes for cello and chamber music in France and Switzerland (among others with Herman Krebbers) and participated in competitions in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Romania, among others. In 1996 he joined the Noord-Nederlands Orkest in Groningen and since 2000 he has been cellist with the Netherlands Philharmonic.
