Sietse-Jan Weijenberg

Principal cello

Sietse-Jan Weijenberg studied with Jan-Ype Nota and Michel Strauss, and took master classes with János Starker and Natalia Gutman, among others.

He won prizes at several international soloist competitions, culminating in the finals of the worldwide Rostropovich Competition. With his piano trio Demian, Weijenberg won first prize at the international Maria Canals Piano Trio Competition in 2009. Since 2010, he has served as cello leader with several orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Residentie Orchestra, and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2013, he received a permanent position as such with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist, Sietse-Jan Weijenberg has performed with various orchestras (Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Netherlands Student Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris). He is also a guest of the orchestra Le Cercle de l'Harmonie, playing on authentic instruments, and the New European Ensemble, which specializes in contemporary music. He plays at such renowned festivals as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and the Storioni Festival. With the Canadian label Ultra Analogue, he has made recordings of works by Bach and Beethoven and Rachmaninov.
