That Mahler’s music can also be intimate and restrained is attested by the mesmerising Adagietto that forms a serene interlude in his Symphony no. 5. Mezzo-soprano Karin Strobos further sings Mahler’s sublime Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra plays Arnold Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht in a softly stirring string arrangement.
