Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps and Wynton Marsalis' Cello Concerto
Hanna Lintu conducts Le sacre du printemps
With Le sacre du printemps , Igor Stravinsky wrote a work that changed music history forever. The infamous premiere in 1913, which resulted in an unprecedented scandal, marked the beginning of a new musical language full of unstoppable rhythms and daring sound collages. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the work under the baton of the much sought-after Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, who is chief conductor of the Finnish National Opera and Finnish Ballet, among other things, and who made his debut with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023.
Cello Concerto by Wynton Marsalis performed by Alisa Weilerstein
The Sacre is a very rhythmic piece. The same can be said of the European premiere of the jazzy Cello Concerto written by the famous American composer Wynton Marsalis, partly commissioned by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a groundbreaking work in which jazz and classical music come together in a unique way. The soloist with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is the American star cellist Alisa Weilerstein, renowned for her expressive playing and her passion for both the great cello repertoire and contemporary compositions.
This programme can be heard on 31 October and 2 November in the Concertgebouw.
